Hyundai recently revealed its newest car from its luxury division. The Genesis G70 is an entry-level luxury sports car taking direct aim at the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes C Class and other performance-oriented compact sedans.
Along with being the newest entry in a highly competitive automotive segment, it also fleshes out the Genesis line.
The Genesis G70 offers three powertrain options. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower. It is worth noting that this is more than what you get from the base models from both the 3 Series and the C Class.
Up next is the 3.3-liter twin turbo V6 that delivers 365 horsepower. They are billing this Genesis as the enthusiast-focused “G70 Sport.”
Finally there’s a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. However, the diesel variant will not be available in the United States.
Luc Donckerwolke designed the Genesis G70. Donkerwolke is the previous lead designer for Bently, Lamborghini and Audi.

The G70 shares exterior design details with other Genesis sedans, but it has a much sportier stance. The long hood and short front overhang, elegant roofline and assertive multi-spoke alloy wheels combine to form a sleek, dynamic profile.
Meanwhile, the inside design is much more akin to the other Genesis sedans. The car emphasizes an excellent user experience with premium materials throughout.
There’s an 8-inch touch screen display, which supports MirrorLink, Car Play and Android Auto. What’s more, a 15-speaker Lexicon surround-sound system is available.
The G70 also borrows the Smart Posture Control System from the Genesis G90. When the driver’s body information is input, the system automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, outside mirror and heads-up display to the optimal position, ensuring minimal stress even on long journeys.
The G70 joins the other sedans from the Genesis lineup. The G90, the brand’s flagship, is a full-size luxury vehicle. The Genesis G80 is a mid-size luxury sedan. Hyundai launched the Genesis line in 2015.
“The Genesis G70 is the latest demonstration of our dedication to delivering innovative, customer-oriented vehicles,” said Dr. Woong-Chul Yang, vice chairman of the Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Division. “We will continue to focus our R&D efforts on the development and expansion of the Genesis brand. It is a great point of pride to have Genesis showcase what a true luxury brand of Korean origin can present to our discerning customers.”
Genesis wants to add two SUVs and a high-performance car to its lineup by 2021 to complement its luxury sedans.
The Genesis G70 goes on sale in Korea on Sept. 20. The vehicle is due in the United States by early next spring.
