Best-Selling Vehicles: The 20 Most Popular Cars in the U.S.

The year 2015 was another record-setting month in car sales in the U.S. Overall, 13 car brands saw record-setting growth and more than 17 million vehicles were bought for the first time since 2001. It comes as no surprise which brands are in the top thirteen. You’ll recognize a few of the names, including the best-selling car in America 14 years running, the Toyota Camry.1. Ford F-seriesWidely known as the best-selling truck series for nine years straight, the Ford F-150, F-250, and the heavy-duty remainder of the F-Series lineup tops the list yet again. It’s not just the best-selling truck but the best-selling vehicle overall. With leaps in development including stop-start technology and a 10-speed automatic transmission coming down the pipe, it’s no wonder this innovator sells so many vehicles.Number of F-Series vehicles sold in 2015: 780,3542. Chevrolet SilveradoThe Chevrolet Silverado is quickly climbing the sales ladder. With a year-over-year increase in sales of 13.5 percent, it won’t be long until the Silverado gets to par with its Ford rival. Chevy trucks really gained in popularity since the redesign in 2014 with a focus on comfort and convenience that matches the rugged abilities of the truck.Number of Silverado trucks sold in 2015: 600,5443. Ram PickupsRounding out the top three in sales, the Ram pickup series has done well since its “split” from the Dodge name. While just barely over half as many Ram trucks were sold as Ford F-Series trucks, it’s still enough to take third place in vehicles sold in the U.S. overall in 2015. That’s largely in part to its bold redesigns and its extremely popular HEMI engine. Look out for the 2017 Ram Power Wagon to be released later this year, bolstering their numbers even more.Number of Ram pickups sold in 2015: 451,1164. Toyota CamryWhile trucks took the first three overall spots on top sales, Toyota Camry nabs fourth place with the highest passenger car sales for the same period. Yes, it’s now 14 years in a row that Camry has been the top-selling car in the U.S., carried by the reliability and value Toyota brings to the table. Since it’s redesign in 2012, the Camry has improved its “fashion sense” and improved its appeal to more than the geriatric population, solidifying its position over the second place car.Number of Toyota Camrys sold in 2015: 429,3535. Toyota CorollaToyota placed first and second in the best-selling cars segment, following up the Camry’s win with the Corolla taking runner-up spot. It’s also been redesigned as of late, in 2014 and funky new additions have been added including LED lights, aggressive grille and stance, and a sportier feel, essentially doing away with the economy car feel without jacking up the price.Number of Toyota Corollas sold in 2015: 363,3326. Honda AccordThe top three cars sold in the U.S. were all imports, rounded out by the family car from Honda, the Accord. The Accord actually lost ground this year in sales, more so than any of its top-selling classmates, dropping 8.5 percent in sales since 2014. Had the drop in sales not occurred, Accord would have swapped positions with Corolla, though still firmly behind the Camry. Honda Accord is due for a refresh in the next year or two, likely bumping their sales up.Number of Honda Accords sold in 2015: 355,5577. Honda CR-VWhat Honda lacks in single vehicle sales it makes up for in number of high-selling models. The CR-V takes seventh place as the top-selling SUV for 2015, well ahead of the RAV4, Escape, and Rogue. The current CR-V takes compact SUV ownership to a new level, incorporating much more refined materials and comfort, not to mention more standard options, into even its most base model.Number of Honda CR-Vs sold in 2015: 345,6478. Honda CivicThe Honda Civic has been a standard on the top-selling list in America for decades because if its low entry-level price point along with the ability to fit it with some of the best features available in its class. Oh yeah, its undeniable fuel economy always helps too. The 2016 Honda Civic has been plagued by a few problems including engine issues, but growing pains have not been enough to douse the fire the Civic brings to Honda’s sales force.Number of Honda Civics sold in 2015: 335,3849. Nissan AltimaNissan’s midsize car, again, makes the top-selling list firmly planted in the middle of the pack. Its numbers are virtually the same as last year, though sagging just slightly with a 0.7 percent drop in sales. Those numbers should solidify and ramp up with the redesign of the newest release for 2016, bringing the Altima’s design into the current era of cars.Number of Nissan Altimas sold in 2015: 333,39810. Toyota RAV4Honda CR-V, look out! The Toyota RAV4 is hot on your heels, posting a massive increase in numbers over the 2014 sales numbers. Selling nearly 50,000 more RAV4s than in 2014, another massive increase like that will bump them much higher than tenth on the best-seller list next year. The trendy, car-like exterior design up front along with the roomy interior and flexible seating options make RAV4 and increasingly obvious choice.Number of Toyota RAV4s sold in 2015: 315,41211. Ford EscapeThe only domestic-built SUV to crack the top 13, the Escape is holding virtually steady in sales, managing to sell 280 more vehicles in 2015 over the previous year. The stagnant sales numbers predict a drop for next year unless new tech features and options bolster its sales.
