2021 Ford F-150: The King of Trucks is All-New
It’s one of the most important vehicle launches every time it happens. Ford’s F-Series pickup sells close to 1 million units a year, making the 2021 Ford F-150, the newest version of the iconic truck, a really big deal. The new truck is more high-tech, adds new features to make it better for work, and a hybrid version plus a built-in generator to power your work site.
Ford calls the 2021 Ford F-150 the “toughest, most productive F-150 ever,” but no self-respecting truck maker would ever tell you differently. It’s what they’ve included in the truck, though, that makes us take the claim seriously. Starting with an all-new body and 11 different grille options depending on trim. There are larger tires and higher fenders pulled out wider for a more powerful stance.
Under the hood of the 2021 Ford F-150 are some familiar engines, like the 2.7L and 3.5L V6 twin-turbo EcoBoost engines and the 5.0L V8. New is a 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid V6. Ford didn’t release power specs but did say it’ll have more power and torque than any other light-duty full-size pickup. It’ll also target an EPA range of 700 miles or about 23 mpg. It combines the EcoBoost engine and a 47 hp electric motor and a 10-speed automatic.
Pro Power Onboard is an optional generator-level power inverter that offers 2.0 kW on gas engines or 2.4 kW on the hybrid. If you need more, 7.2 kW are available on the PowerBoost, enough to power most workplaces, or even much of your home in case of power failure.
The new interior adds an optional 12.0-inch screen, a massive slab of real estate for displaying Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment. With the optional work desk, the console shifter folds down and the armrest turns into a table for work or dinner wherever you are.
Over the air updates are available for the 2021 Ford F-150, allowing new functions and features over time. The new truck will also add 10 driver-assist features including Active Drive Assist. That’s Ford’s new hands-off driver aid system that will work on more than 100,000 miles of divided highway in the US and Canada. Trucks can be fitted with the feature from day 1, but Ford doesn’t expect it to be active until late next year.
Another new feature is one Ford calls Zone lighting. It lets you pick a zone of the truck’s exterior lights to stay on, lighting up whatever it is you’re trying to do in the dark. A new flat tailgate work surface adds integrated rulers, clamp pickets, and tie-downs to help with job site tasks.
On top trims, Max Recline seats fold flat and raise the cushions to meet on the same plane, making it perfect for a nap or even an overnighter on a particularly long day. Lockable under-seat storage keeps items extra secure when you’re away from the truck. The 2021 Ford F-150 will arrive later this year, built at Ford’s truck plants in Dearborn, MI, and Claycomo, MO.
